Quick answer: Basant Lahore 2027 will be celebrated on 12, 13 and 14 March 2027 within District Lahore only. Kite flying is allowed only on these notified days, only with approved kites and cotton dor (sold as a QR-coded pinna), and every kite business must be registered on the eBiz Punjab portal under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Act 2025.

What is Basant?

Basant (also called Jashn-e-Baharan) is Punjab’s traditional festival welcoming spring. For generations, Lahoris celebrated it on rooftops across the Walled City and beyond — flying patang and gudda kites, wearing yellow, cooking festive food and playing music late into the night. The kite-cutting contest, or “bo kata”, is the heart of the celebration.

After years of deaths and injuries caused by metal and glass-coated string, kite flying was banned in Punjab in 2007. Basant officially returned to Lahore in February 2026 under a new, strict regulatory law.

Basant 2027 dates in Lahore

The Punjab cabinet approved 12–14 March 2027 as the Basant festival dates. Earlier announcements had mentioned January dates and even a longer, 10-day celebration, but the final cabinet decision moved the festival to March. Media reports note that kite flying remains prohibited on every other day of the year, and violators can face heavy penalties.

How Basant returned: 2026 to 2027

In December 2025 the Government of Punjab introduced the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, which later became an Act. It allowed Basant to be held in a limited, controlled way. Lahore celebrated Basant from 6 to 8 February 2026 — the first legal Basant in roughly 18 years — with drone monitoring, QR-coded string and registered sellers.

Following that revival, the Chief Minister of Punjab announced Basant Lahore 2027. To give the administration time to build a traceable supply chain, registration for kite and dor manufacturers opened on 5 September 2026. Registration for sellers, traders and kite flying associations is expected in January–February 2027.

What is allowed during Basant 2027?

  • Patang kites up to 35″ wide and 30″ long, and Gudda kites up to 40″ wide and 34″ long.
  • Cotton dor only, coated with an approved glue, flour and powder maanjha.
  • Dor sold only as a pinna (ball), each carrying its own QR code for verification.
  • Kites and dor bought only from sellers registered with the Deputy Commissioner Lahore.

What is banned?

  • Charkhi (spool) of any kind.
  • Metallic, chemical, glass-coated, nylon or otherwise sharp string.
  • Kites showing any person, holy scripture, religious place, national flag or political party symbol.
  • Flying kites outside Lahore or on non-festival days.
  • Aerial firing, loud music/DJ systems, alcohol and drugs on rooftops.

Do you need to register?

If you only want to fly kites with your family, you do not need business registration — you simply buy approved material from a registered seller. If you manufacture, trade, store, transport or sell kite material, or run a kite flying association, registration is mandatory. Our Basant registration guide explains each category, documents and fees step by step.

Basant safety checklist for families

  1. Fly only from rooftops with a proper wall or grill — never from unsecured roofs.
  2. Keep children supervised at all times; parents and premises owners are responsible for their safety.
  3. Stay away from electricity wires and transformers. Never try to free a kite stuck in a wire.
  4. Install a safety rod/wire on every motorcycle — it is mandatory in Lahore.
  5. Check the QR code on your pinna and keep your purchase receipt.
  6. Report hazardous string or illegal sellers to the authorities.

Food, colours and traditions

Basant is as much about community as kites. Families dress in yellow and green to mirror mustard fields in bloom, rooftops are decorated with lights, and neighbours share dishes such as nihari, halwa puri, pakoray and sweet yellow rice. In 2027, celebrations must also follow the code of conduct, which bans loud sound systems, aerial firing and intoxicants.
